There’s something about the new year that brings a sense of motivation. But for many, this new-found motivation doesn’t last. 

About 189 million people will set a New Year’s resolution, and about 80 percent of this population will ditch their resolutions by March. Don’t be a part of the 80 percent.

Goal setting is easy, but executing it is the real battle. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 5 tips for achieving your New Year’s resolutions. 

Break Your Goals Into Small Steps

Taking on too much is asking for failure. Drastically cutting calories, overtraining in the gym, or dramatically changing your normal behavior are surefire ways to hamper your goals. Instead, try taking baby steps.

For example, if one of your goals is to lose weight, try slowly replacing junk food with more nutritious foods. If you want to work out more, challenge yourself to exercise at least two or three times a week.

When you break up your goals into smaller, actionable steps, you’ll find that they are easier to accomplish. 

Choose One Realistic Goal

Many people think that the new year means that they have to change every bad habit. However, it's not realistic to change your entire life at once. Not to mention, trying to fulfil a mile-long list of goals is exhausting.

Instead, pick one area of your life you would like to improve. Prioritising your efforts on one specific goal makes it much more attainable. Also, choosing one goal helps establish new behavioural patterns.

Even the American Psychological Association suggests that focusing on one behavior at a time is more likely to result in long-term success.

Plan Ahead

As the saying goes, “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. Experts say that planning is an essential part of making a behavior change.

To ensure your goals for the new year are a success, prepare for them. You can start by writing down your goal and the things you need to accomplish it.

For example, if your goal is to spend money wisely, invest in budgeting software and tools. If you want to quit smoking, research effective alternatives to smoking.

The better you plan for your resolutions, the greater chance you have at reaching your goals.

To add, having a game plan for your goals helps you figure out how you will navigate challenges and roadblocks.

Even with flawless preparation, there will still be struggles. Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons people abandon their New Year’s resolutions.

When you slip up on your plans, it’s crucial to learn from your mistakes. Make a note of what went wrong and reevaluate your strategies.

If you need to, reach out for support from friends and family. Having a solid support system helps you stay focused and motivated despite setbacks.

You can even join a support group that has the same goal. This is another way to boost encouragement.

Visualise It

Seeing is believing. Research indicates that visualization helps you to achieve your goals. It was found that mental imagery helps improve cognitive functions like motor control, attention, planning, and perception. 

Studies also suggest that visualisation techniques can also enhance motivation and increase confidence. 

There are many ways you can go about

visualise your goals. A common method is meditation.

Begin by finding a quiet place. Next, sit with your eyes closed and take a few deep breaths. Finally, visualise your future self after you’ve achieved your goals.

Another way you can take advantage of visualisation is by creating a vision board. This a collage of photos that represent what you want to accomplish. To activate the power of your vision board, place it somewhere you can see it often.
